Top Tips For Eating Heathily At BBQs 🔥

Summer is finally here and with that comes family get togethers and BBQs.

Does the thought of eating at a BBQ fill you with dread, thinking ‘What can I eat that is healthy?’.

Here are some simple tips for eating healthily at BBQs.

1. Go for the leaner cuts of meat 🐔

Try choosing some leaner meat options like skinless chicken breast, lean ground poultry and fish such as salmon or trout or opt for leaner cuts like sirloin or tenderloin, or lean ground beef. Trim visible fat and marbling before grilling and to compensate for having less moisture, you can tenderise meat by marinating it. Making your own burgers or koftas is another great way of controlling not only the ingredients but also the portion size.

2. Add lots of fruits and vegetables 🥗🍆🍑🍍

There are lots of different ways to add fruits and vegetables to the BBQ menu. It can be as simple as having a selection of fruit and vegetables with dips that make them more fun to eat or making healthy vegetable kebabs using a variety of colourful veggies. You can grill almost anything, try including options such as courgette, aubergine and corn-on-the-cob or peaches, plums and pineapple.

3. Use dressings and condiments wisely 🧴

Traditional shop-bought salad dressings can be laden with fat and salt, and sides like potato salad and coleslaw contain lots of mayonnaise. Instead, you could make your own salad dressings or swap the mayonnaise in coleslaw or potato salad for yoghurt, mustard and a dash of vinegar, this will lighten it up but keep the creamy flavour.

Also, think about condiments like tomato ketchup and BBQ sauce as these can be high in sugar and salt. Some good alternatives include mustard, salsa, guacamole, hummus or tzatziki.

4. Build a balanced plate 🍽⚖

Remember that a BBQ is just another meal. Think about the balance of complex carbohydrates, lean protein, fruit and vegetables and healthy fats you have on your plate. Stacking your plate with a variety of foods and opting for things like vegetable skewers and side salads, as well as protein and carbohydrates, is an easy way to ensure you have a balanced meal.
